पूर्णचन्द्रमिव व्योम्नि तुषारावृतमण्डलम् | रेणुध्वस्तं दीर्घभुजं मातड्रमिव विक्रमे
pūrṇacandram iva vyomni tuṣārāvṛtamaṇḍalam | reṇudhvastam dīrghabhujaṃ mātaṅgam iva vikrame ||
सञ्जय उवाच—व्योम्नि पूर्णचन्द्रमिव तुषारावृतमण्डलम्, रेणुध्वस्तं दीर्घभुजं मातङ्गमिव विक्रमे। एवं दुर्योधनः पूर्वतेजः प्रच्छन्नं, मानोऽभिमानः समरधर्मेण निहतः॥
संजय उवाच
The verse underscores impermanence and the moral leveling power of war: outward splendor and pride can be suddenly obscured, just as the full moon’s brilliance is hidden by mist. Valor exists, yet circumstances and consequences can reduce even the mighty to a humbled state.
Sañjaya reports to Dhṛtarāṣṭra that Duryodhana—once radiant and formidable—now appears dust-covered and diminished amid the battle’s turmoil, described through vivid similes of a mist-veiled full moon and a powerful elephant in combat.
