Duryodhana-śibira-praveśaḥ — The Pāṇḍavas Enter the Kaurava Camp; The Burning of Arjuna’s Chariot
त्वद्योषै्निहत: पाप तस्मादसि हतो रणे । जब पाण्डव शिकारके लिये तृणबिन्दुके आश्रमपर चले गये थे
tvad-doṣaiḥ nihataḥ pāpa tasmād asi hato raṇe | yadā pāṇḍavāḥ śikārārthaṁ tṛṇabindor āśramaṁ gatāḥ, tadā pāpī jayadrathaḥ vane draupadīṁ yaḥ kleśam akārayat; pāpātman, tavaiva aparādhena ca bahubhir yoddhubhiḥ sametya yuddhasthale ekākinaṁ bālakam abhimanyum avadhīt—ebhiḥ sarvaiḥ kāraṇaiḥ adya tvam api raṇabhūmau nihato 'si ||
वायुरुवाच—त्वदोषैर्निहतः पाप, तस्मादसि हतो रणे। यदा पाण्डवाः मृगयार्थं तृणबिन्दोराश्रमं गताः, तदा पापी जयद्रथो वने द्रौपदीं क्लेशयामास। तथा पापात्मन्! तवापराधेन बहवो योद्धारः समागताः, रणाङ्गणे एकाकिनं बालमभिमन्युं जघ्नुः। एतेषां सर्वेषां कारणानां फलतः अद्य त्वमपि समरे पतितोऽसि।
वायुदेव उवाच
The verse frames battlefield death as the moral consequence of prior adharma: harming Draupadī and enabling the unfair, collective killing of the lone Abhimanyu. It emphasizes karma—one’s own faults become the cause of one’s downfall.
Vāyu addresses a fallen or condemned warrior, declaring that his death in battle is justified by earlier crimes: Jayadratha’s harassment of Draupadī during the Pāṇḍavas’ absence and the coordinated slaying of Abhimanyu when he was isolated.
