“पहलेकी बात है, राजा विराटकी कन्या और गाण्डीवधारी अर्जुनकी पुत्रवधू जब उपप्लव्यनगरमें रहती थी, उस समय किसी व्रतवान्‌ ब्राह्मणने उसे देखकर कहा-- ।। परिक्षीणेषु कुरुषु पुत्रस्तव भविष्यति । एतदस्य परिक्षित्त्वं गर्भस्थस्य भविष्यति,“बेटी! जब कौरववंश परिक्षीण हो जायगा, तब तुम्हें एक पुत्र प्राप्त होगा और इसीलिये उस गर्भस्थ शिशुका नाम परीक्षित्‌ होगा”

pūrvavṛttam idaṃ rājñi virāṭasya sutā tathā | gāṇḍīvadhāry arjunasya snuṣā copaplavye pure vasantīṃ vratavān brāhmaṇo dṛṣṭvā prāha— parikṣīṇeṣu kuruṣu putras tava bhaviṣyati | etad asya parikṣittvaṃ garbhasthasya bhaviṣyati ||

पूर्ववृत्तमिदं राजन्। उपप्लव्यपुरे वसन्तीं विराटदुहितरं गाण्डीवधन्वनः स्नुषां दृष्ट्वा व्रतवान् ब्राह्मणोऽब्रवीत्—परिक्षीणेषु कुरुषु पुत्रस्तव भविष्यति। एतदस्य परिक्षित्त्वं गर्भस्थस्य भविष्यति॥
