Śiśupāla-vākya: Bhīṣma-nindā and the ‘Haṃsa’ Exemplum

Bhīṣma affirms two linked ideas: Kṛṣṇa’s demonstrated supremacy in the arena of kṣatriya duty (victory in war) and Kṛṣṇa’s deeper status as the sustaining ground of the world. Ethically, it suggests that true political and martial authority is legitimate only when aligned with the higher order embodied by Kṛṣṇa.
In the Sabha Parva context, Bhīṣma is speaking in the royal assembly and invokes Kṛṣṇa’s past conquests over eminent warrior-kings to establish his unmatched stature. He then elevates the claim from historical prowess to a cosmic assertion: the whole world is established in Kṛṣṇa (Vārṣṇeya).
