Adhyāya 31: Rājasūya-samāgama — The Gathering of Kings and the Ordering of Hospitality
ततः स भगवानन्निश्चकमे तां सुदर्शनाम् । नीलस्य राज्ञ: सर्वेषामुपनीतश्चव॒ सो5भवत्,तत्पश्चात् भगवान् अग्नि उस सुदर्शना नामकी राजकन्याको चाहने लगे। इस बातको राजा नील और सभी नागरिक जान गये
tataḥ sa bhagavān agnir niścakāme tāṃ sudarśanām | nīlasya rājñaḥ sarveṣām upanītaś ca so 'bhavat |
ततः स भगवान् अग्निश्चकमे तां सुदर्शनाम्। नीलस्य राज्ञः सर्वेषां चोपनीतं तदाभवत्॥
वैशम्पायन उवाच
The verse highlights how personal desire—even when arising in a divine being—creates ethical pressure on society and rulers, implying that dharma requires careful handling of powerful impulses within the bounds of propriety and responsibility.
Agni develops desire for the princess Sudarśanā; the fact becomes known to King Nīla and the populace, setting up the ensuing events and the king’s response.
