वैशम्पायन उवाच
The verse foregrounds the ethical and psychological reality that even great heroes can be overwhelmed by grief and disillusionment; it prepares for wise counsel (upadeśa) that steadies the mind and reorients one toward dharma amid irreversible loss.
The narrator describes a person (contextually, Arjuna) as repeatedly sighing and mentally unsettled and dejected; observing this state, the sage Vyāsa begins to speak, setting up the next instruction or consoling discourse.
