अध्याय ९ — कर्णस्य प्रहारः, योधयुग्मनियोजनम्, शैनेय-कैकेययोर्युद्धविन्यासः
भ्रातृभावेन पृथिवीं भुड़क्ष्व पाण्ड्सुतैः सह । बाण-शय्यापर सोये हुए महात्मा भीष्मने अर्जुनसे पानी माँगा और उन्होंने इसके लिये पृथ्वीको छेद दिया। इस प्रकार पाण्डुपुत्र अर्जुनके द्वारा प्रकट की हुई उस जलधाराको देखकर महाबाहु भीष्मने दुर्योधनसे कहा--“तात! पाण्डवोंके साथ संधि कर लो। संधिसे वैरकी शान्ति हो जायगी
bhrātṛbhāvena pṛthivīṃ bhukṣva pāṇḍusutaiḥ saha |
भ्रातृभावेन पृथिवीं भुङ्क्ष्व पाण्डुसुतैः सह । सन्धिना शम्यते वैरं मम जीवितसङ्क्षये ॥
