Kṛṣṇa’s Exhortation to Arjuna
Prelude to Karṇa’s Slaying
saṃpātaṃ cānupaśyāma saṅgrāme bhṛśadāruṇe | śalabhā iva saṃpetuḥ samantāc charavṛṣṭayaḥ ||
The verse underscores the terrifying impersonality of war: when weapons fall in overwhelming masses, individual valor and discernment are eclipsed, reminding the listener of the ethical gravity and human cost that accompany kṣatriya warfare.
Sañjaya reports to Dhṛtarāṣṭra that the battlefield has become extraordinarily dreadful, with arrows raining down from all directions and converging like locust swarms—an image of continuous, all-encompassing missile fire.
