Yudhiṣṭhira’s Reproach to Dhanaṃjaya
pratilabhya tu rādheyaḥ saṃjñāṃ nāticirād iva | daśne rājavināśāya manaḥ krūraparākramaḥ ||
The verse highlights how, in the heat of conflict, inner impulses like anger and the thirst for victory can quickly return even after a setback. Ethically, it warns that mere recovery of strength is not the same as recovery of discernment; without restraint, renewed power can immediately serve destructive intent.
Sañjaya reports that Karna, after briefly losing consciousness, soon comes to himself and immediately directs his mind toward killing ‘the king’—i.e., he renews a lethal resolve against a principal royal opponent in the ongoing battle.
