Droṇa-parva 55
ह्ृदयेन मया पूर्व वृतां वै वृतवानसि । यस्माद् वृता त्वया विप्र मा गा: स्वर्ग यथेप्सया,“ब्रह्मन! मैंने मन-ही-मन पहले ही जिसका वरण कर लिया था, उसीका तुमने वरण किया है। अतः तुमने मेरी मनोनीत पत्नीको वर लिया है, इसलिये अब तुम इच्छानुसार स्वर्गमें नहीं जा सकते”
hṛdayena mayā pūrvaṃ vṛtāṃ vai vṛtavān asi | yasmād vṛtā tvayā vipra mā gāḥ svargaṃ yathepsayā ||
हृदयेन मया पूर्वं वृतां वै वृतवानसि । यस्माद् वृता त्वया विप्र मा गाः स्वर्गं यथेप्सया ॥
व्यास उवाच
Inner intention and prior claim (especially regarding marriage) are treated as ethically weighty; taking what another has already chosen invites restraint and consequence, even for one seeking spiritual reward like heaven.
Vyāsa addresses a brāhmaṇa, stating that the woman the brāhmaṇa has chosen was already chosen by Vyāsa in his heart; therefore Vyāsa forbids him from proceeding to heaven as he pleases, indicating a moral impediment arising from that act.
