na diśo tad dyauḥ na ca urvī ca na samaṃ viṣamaṃ tathā |

Educational Q&A

The verse highlights how extreme violence and calamity cloud discernment: when perception fails, even basic orientation and recognition collapse, warning that war breeds moral and practical confusion.

Sañjaya describes a moment on the battlefield when darkness becomes so dense that directions, sky, and ground cannot be distinguished, and combatants—Kauravas, Pāñcālas, and Pāṇḍavas—cannot be identified.
