Even amid war, choices exist between killing and restraining. The verse reflects a tactical and ethical tension: capturing an enemy alive can be seen as restraint, yet it may also be motivated by fear, calculation, or the wish to deny the opponent a warrior’s death.
A powerful warrior has entered the opposing formation. The assembled kings confer and decide to seize him alive and make him a captive, indicating both his threat and their coordinated response.
