Bhīṣma–Dhanaṃjaya Duel and the Opening Clash
तयोर्नवरयोर्दृष्टवा तादृशं त॑ पराक्रमम्
tayor nara-varyor dṛṣṭvā tādṛśaṃ taḥ parākramam
सञ्जय उवाच—तयोर्नरवरयोर्दृष्ट्वा तादृशं पराक्रमम् । तयोर्वीर्यबलाघातेन स विस्मितोऽभवत्; यथा युद्धे शक्तिः संयुज्यमाना धर्ममर्यादां संयमं च परीक्षते, तथा तस्य मनसि घोरसङ्ग्रामस्य निमित्तं समजायत ॥
संजय उवाच
The verse highlights how witnessing immense martial prowess can signal the gravity of dharma under strain: valor is admirable, yet in war it also intensifies ethical pressure—duty, restraint, and right conduct are tested when power is unleashed.
