Ethical discipline and mental restraint are prerequisites for yoga: be calm and fearless, live in brahmacarya-like self-restraint, control the mind, and keep consciousness fixed on Krishna as the highest goal.
In the Bhīṣma Parva’s Bhagavadgītā context, instruction is being given on the proper inner posture for meditation and yoga—how a practitioner should sit and abide: steady, self-controlled, and devoted to Krishna.
