Viewing Bhīṣma’s Battle Array and Arjuna’s Reassurance
te vayaṁ saṁśayaṁ prāptāḥ sa-sainyāḥ śatrukarṣaṇa | katham asmān mahāvyūhād utthānaṁ no bhaviṣyati ||
The verse highlights the psychological and ethical pressure of war: even seasoned warriors can be overwhelmed by uncertainty when confronted with a seemingly inescapable strategic situation. It frames the need for clear counsel, steadiness, and right action (dharma) amid crisis.
Sanjaya reports a moment of alarm: the forces find themselves trapped or threatened by a powerful ‘mahā-vyūha’ (major battle formation). Addressing Arjuna as ‘śatrukarṣaṇa,’ he asks how their side can break out and survive the formation’s danger.
