The verse underscores the human cost of war: when ambition and enmity dominate, even those upholding kṣatriya duty end up scattered and fallen, reminding the listener that victory pursued without restraint leads to widespread suffering.
Sañjaya reports to Dhṛtarāṣṭra that the battlefield is filled on all sides with fallen fighters lying on the earth, marking an intense phase of the Kurukṣetra war just before the narration moves toward Bhīṣma’s further actions.
