The verse highlights an ethical moment of self-awareness: a ruler, upon receiving a discouraging or corrective response, feels shame and inner agitation. Such discomfort can become the doorway to better counsel—here symbolized by the timely appearance of the sage Nārada—suggesting that humility and receptivity are prerequisites for right guidance in dharma.
Vyāsa narrates that King Marutta, having received a particular reply (from the prior context), becomes embarrassed and troubled. He turns back and, while on the road, encounters the divine sage Nārada, setting up the next exchange of advice or instruction.
