The verse teaches that one’s moral stability and right conduct (dharma) are nurtured through reverence for and proximity to a guiding elder—seen simultaneously as parent and teacher. It emphasizes gratitude, dependence, and the ethical weight of not abandoning one’s protector and preceptor.
Yudhiṣṭhira addresses a revered elder with deep humility, pleading that without him they are directionless. The line functions as an emotional and ethical appeal to prevent separation, underscoring the Pandavas’ reliance on the elder’s guidance in the aftermath of the great war.
