श्रीमहेश्वर उवाच
The verse frames ethical inquiry as a legitimate and important act: Umā respectfully approaches Śiva with a serious doubt, implying that understanding dharma and the meaning of ritual actions requires questioning and clarification from a trustworthy authority.
Umā (Pārvatī) addresses Śiva using epithets drawn from the Dakṣa-yajña episode—where Śiva’s forces disrupted Dakṣa’s sacrifice and deities like Bhaga and Pūṣan were injured—and she introduces a major doubt she wants resolved, setting up the teaching that follows in the chapter.
