Conduct of the Virtuous Wife
तमुत्स्मयन्तं सम्प्रेक्ष्य मैत्रेय: कृष्णमब्रवीत् । कारण ब्रूहि धर्मात्मन् व्यस्मयिष्ठा: कुतश्न ते
tam utsmayantaṁ samprekṣya maitreyaḥ kṛṣṇam abravīt | kāraṇaṁ brūhi dharmātman vyasmayiṣṭhāḥ kutaś ca te ||
तमुत्स्मयन्तं सम्प्रेक्ष्य मैत्रेयः कृष्णमब्रवीत्। कारणं ब्रूहि धर्मात्मन् व्यस्मयिष्ठाः कुतस्त्वया॥
भीष्म उवाच
The verse models dharmic inquiry: even a subtle expression like a smile in a great person is treated as meaningful, prompting respectful questioning to uncover its ethical or spiritual cause.
Maitreya notices Krishna smiling and, intrigued, asks him directly to explain the reason for his sudden smile/astonishment.
