Praise of Ācāra as the Basis of Longevity, Fame, and Prosperity
प्रतिदिन अग्निकी सेवा करे, नित्यप्रति भिक्षुको भिक्षा दे और मौन होकर प्रतिदिन दन्तथधावन किया करे ।।
bhīṣma uvāca | na sandhyāyāṃ svapennityaṃ snāyāc chuddhaḥ sadā bhavet | na cābhyuditaśāyī syāt prāyaścittī tathā bhavet | mātāpitaram utthāya pūrvam evābhivādayet |
न संध्यायां स्वपेन्नित्यं स्नायाच्छुद्धः सदा भवेत् । न चाभ्युदितशायी स्यात् प्रायश्चित्ती तथा भवेत् । मातापितरमुत्थाय पूर्वमेवाभिवादयेत् ॥
भीष्म उवाच
Maintain disciplined daily conduct: avoid sleeping at sacred twilight, keep bodily and ritual purity through bathing, avoid lethargy after sunrise, and begin the day by honoring one’s parents—seen as a primary pillar of dharma.
Bhishma, in his instruction on righteous living, lists practical observances (vows of conduct) that cultivate purity, self-control, and reverence—framing them as everyday duties that support ethical life and spiritual rectitude.
