Praise of Ācāra as the Basis of Longevity, Fame, and Prosperity
दिनमें कभी मैथुन न करे। कुमारी कन्या और कुलटाके साथ कभी समागम न करे। अपनी पत्नी भी जबतक ऋतुस्नाता न हो तबतक उसके साथ समागम न करे। इससे मनुष्यको बड़ी आयु प्राप्त होती है ।।
divā kadācid maithunaṁ na kuryāt | kumārī-kanyayā saha ca kulaṭayā saha ca kadācid api samāgamaṁ na kuryāt | svāṁ bhāryām api yāvat ṛtu-snātaṁ na bhavati tāvat tayā saha samāgamaṁ na kuryāt | etena manuṣyo dīrgham āyur avāpnoti || sve sve tīrthe samācamya kārye samupakalpite | triḥ pītvāpo dviḥ pramṛjya kṛta-śauco bhaven naraḥ ||
न दिवा मैथुनं कुर्यात् कन्यां न च कुलटां तथा । स्वभार्यामपि न गच्छेत् यावदृतुस्नाता भवेत् ॥ तथायुर्विन्दते महत् ॥ स्वे स्वे तीर्थे समाचम्य कार्ये समुपकल्पिते । त्रिः पीत्वापो द्विः प्रमृज्य कृतशौचो भवेन्नरः ॥
भीष्म उवाच
Bhishma teaches disciplined sexual ethics—avoiding improper partners and times, and observing the wife’s post-menstrual ritual readiness—along with basic rules of ācamana for ritual cleanliness; such self-restraint and purity are said to support longevity and dharmic living.
In Anushasana Parva, Bhishma is instructing Yudhishthira on dharma and right conduct. Here he gives practical injunctions for householders: restraints regarding sexual conduct and a brief procedural rule for purification (ācamana) when undertaking a task.
