The verse frames marriage as an ethical act with social and religious consequences: one should seek to avoid adharma, especially wrongdoing believed to arise from varṇa-confusion (varṇa-saṅkara), and proactively request safeguards aligned with dharma.
King Yayāti addresses Bhārgava (Śukra) while seeking a boon. He asks that the grave adharma connected with the perceived risk of varṇa-saṅkara in the contemplated marriage should not attach to him.
