Garuda (Vinātā-putra), addressing Lord Vishnu
Concept: The Self and the totality of tattvas are to be saluted; the divine as Time is the revealer and regulator of prescribed practice.
Vedantic Theme: Kāla as īśvara-śakti governing manifestation; movement from parts (tattvas) to whole (sarva-tattva) and surrender to the revealer.
Application: Contemplate time as sacred discipline: let daily practice be guided by awareness of impermanence and cosmic order; dedicate outcomes to the divine.
Primary Rasa: adbhuta
Secondary Rasa: shanta
Type: cosmic-temporal frame invoked within ritual
Related Themes: Garuda Purana 1.42.22 (purification of imperfect acts); Garuda Purana 1.42.23 (completion of vow/observance)
This verse frames worship as recognition of the Self-principle and the totality of realities (tattvas), implying that ritual is meant to culminate in right knowledge of Ātman and the cosmic order.
By identifying the Lord as Kāla (Time), it points to Time as the governing force behind embodied experience and transition; realizing the Self and the Lord’s cosmic governance supports detachment and spiritual clarity central to the soul’s journey.
Use ritual or daily prayer to cultivate self-inquiry (Ātman awareness) and acceptance of impermanence (Kāla), aligning actions with dharma rather than anxiety over outcomes.
