Puruṣottama-nāma-nirvacana
एतज्ज्ञानं विदुर्विप्रा ध्रुवमिन्द्रियधारणम् । एतऊज्ञानं च पन्थाक्ष येन यान्ति मनीषिण:,इन्द्रियोंको दृढ़तापूर्वक संयममें रखना चाहिये। विद्वान् ब्राह्मण इसीको ज्ञान मानते हैं। यह ज्ञान ही वह मार्ग है, जिससे मनीषी पुरुष चलते हैं
sañjaya uvāca |
etaj jñānaṃ vidur viprā dhruvam indriya-dhāraṇam |
etad ū jñānaṃ ca panthāś ca yena yānti manīṣiṇaḥ ||
Санджая сказал: «Учёные брахманы знают: это и есть истинное знание — стойкое владычество над чувствами. Это и есть знание, и это путь, по которому идут мудрые».
संजय उवाच
True knowledge is defined as unwavering restraint of the senses (indriya-dhāraṇa). Such self-mastery is presented not merely as a technique but as the very path on which the wise advance.
In Sañjaya’s narration within the Udyoga Parva context, a didactic point is being stated: sages regard disciplined control of the senses as the hallmark of genuine wisdom, indicating the ethical foundation expected amid the rising tensions before war.
