व्रतमेतन्‍्मम सदा पृथिव्यामपि विश्रुतम्‌ । स्त्रियां स्त्रीपूर्वके चैव स्त्रीनाम्नि स्त्रीसरूपिणि,न मुज्चेयमहं बाणमिति कौरवनन्दन । कौरवनन्दन! इस भूमण्डलमें भी मेरा यह व्रत प्रसिद्ध है कि जो स्त्री हो, जो पहले स्त्री रहकर पुरुष हुआ हो, जिसका नाम स्त्रीके समान हो तथा जिसका रूप एवं वेष-भूषा स्त्रियोंके समान हो, इन सबपर मैं बाण नहीं छोड़ सकता

vratam etan mama sadā pṛthivyām api viśrutam | striyāṃ strīpūrvake caiva strīnāmni strīsarūpiṇi na muñceyam ahaṃ bāṇam iti kauravanandana |

Бхишма сказал: «Этот мой обет издавна известен по всей земле: я не выпущу стрелу в женщину, ни в того, кто прежде был женщиной и затем стал мужчиной, ни в того, чьё имя женского рода, ни в того, чьи облик и одеяние подобны женским. Таково моё самоограничение, о радость куру.»
