कथान्तरे5थ कम्मिंश्षित् पृष्टोडस्माभिद्धिजोत्तम: | वेदार्थान् भारतार्थाश्व॒ जन्म नारायणात् तथा
kathāntare 'tha kasmiṁścit pṛṣṭo 'smābhir dvijottamaḥ | vedārthān bhāratārthāṁś ca janma nārāyaṇāt tathā ||
Вайшампаяна сказал: Однажды, в ходе беседы, мы спросили Вьясу — лучшего из дважды-рождённых — о смыслах Вед и «Махабхараты», а также о предании его рождения от Нараяны.
वैशम्पायन उवाच
The verse emphasizes that true engagement with sacred tradition involves seeking the inner meaning (artha) of both śruti (the Vedas) and itihāsa (the Mahābhārata), and recognizing their authority as grounded in a divine source (Nārāyaṇa).
Vaiśampāyana reports that the listeners, during a conversation, asked the eminent sage Vyāsa to explain the purport of the Vedas and the Mahābhārata, and to recount how his own birth is connected to Nārāyaṇa.
