प्रजानाथ! बाणको धनुषसे छूटकर पृथ्वीपर गिरनेमें जितनी देर लगती है, उतना ही समय स्पर्शेन्द्रिय, रसना, नेत्र, नासिका और कानके विषयोंका सुख अनुभव करनेमें लगता है अर्थात्‌ विषयोंका सुख क्षणिक है ।। ततो<स्य जायते तीव्रा वेदना तत्क्षयात्‌ पुन: । अबुधा न प्रशंसन्ति मोक्ष सुखमनुत्तमम्‌,फिर वह सुख जब नष्ट हो जाता है, तब उसके लिये मनमें बड़ी वेदना होती है। इतनेपर भी अज्ञानी पुरुष (विषयोंमें ही लिप्त रहते हैं, वे) सर्वोत्तम मोक्ष-सुखकी प्रशंसा नहीं करते हैं अर्थात्‌ उसे नहीं चाहते

prajānātha! bāṇako dhanuṣaḥ chūṭakara pṛthvīpar giranemeṃ jitnī der lagtī hai, utnā hī samaya sparśendriya, rasanā, netra, nāsikā aura kānke viṣayoṃkā sukha anubhav karanemeṃ lagtā hai; arthāt viṣayoṃkā sukha kṣaṇika hai. tato 'sya jāyate tīvrā vedanā tatkṣayāt punaḥ. abudhā na praśaṃsanti mokṣa-sukham anuttamam.

Парашара сказал: «О владыка существ! Удовольствие от предметов осязания, вкуса, зрения, обоняния и слуха длится лишь столько, сколько стрела, выпущенная из лука, летит и падает на землю, — столь мимолётны чувственные наслаждения. Когда же это удовольствие иссякает, в уме вновь поднимается острая боль из‑за его утраты. И всё же неразумные, хотя снова и снова обжигаемы этим кругом краткой сладости и последующей муки, не восхваляют и не ищут непревзойдённого блаженства освобождения (мокша).»

Sense-pleasures are extremely short-lived; when they end, they leave behind renewed craving and sharp distress. Therefore, the wise should turn away from dependence on the senses and value the supreme, lasting happiness of mokṣa (liberation).

In Śānti Parva’s instruction on peace and liberation, the sage Parāśara addresses a ‘lord of creatures’ and uses the image of an arrow’s brief flight to illustrate how quickly sensory enjoyment passes, contrasting it with the enduring bliss of liberation that the ignorant fail to seek.
