Primacy of Non-Harm in Sacrificial Ethics

यदि यज्ञांश्न वक्षांश्न यूपांश्नोद्दिश्य मानवा: । वृथा मांसं न खादन्ति नैष धर्म: प्रशस्थते,यदि कहें कि मनुष्य यूपनिर्माणके उद्देश्यसे जो वृक्ष काटते और यज्ञके उद्देश्यसे पशुबलि देकर जो मांस खाते हैं, वह व्यर्थ नहीं है। अपितु धर्म ही है तो यह ठीक नहीं; क्योंकि ऐसे धर्मकी कोई प्रशंसा नहीं करते

Bhīṣma uvāca: yadi yajñārtham vṛkṣān yūpārtham uddiśya mānavāḥ vṛthā māṁsaṁ na khādanti, naiṣa dharmaḥ praśasyate.

Бхишма сказал: «Если люди утверждают, что когда ради жертвенных столбов (юпа) рубят деревья и едят мясо, полученное от жертвенных животных ради самого жертвоприношения, то это не “напрасно” и потому праведно, — такое не может быть принято. Подобное понимание дхармы не восхваляется: нельзя оправдать вред лишь тем, что назвать его “жертвой”.»
