Adhyāya 193: Adjudication of the Comparable Fruits of Japa and Yoga
इह धर्मपरा: केचित् केचिन्नैकृतिका नरा: । सुखिता दुःखिता: केचिन्निर्थना धनिनो5परे
iha dharmaparāḥ kecit kecin naikṛtikā narāḥ | sukhitā duḥkhitāḥ kecin nirdhanā dhaninō 'pare ||
Бхарадваджа сказал: «Здесь, в человеческом мире, одни преданы дхарме, а другие лживы и коварны в своём поведении. Потому одни живут в счастье, а другие — в страдании; одни богатеют, тогда как другие впадают в нищету».
भरद्वाज उवाच
Human outcomes such as happiness/suffering and wealth/poverty are linked to moral orientation: devotion to dharma versus deceitful conduct. The verse frames social differences as ethically meaningful, inviting self-examination and commitment to righteous behavior.
In the Śānti Parva’s instructional setting, Bharadvāja speaks as a teacher, observing the variety of human character in the world—some righteous, some fraudulent—and pointing to the resulting diversity of life conditions.
