कृतं मृगयसे शत्रुं सुखोपायमसंशयम् । “बुद्धिमानू लोमश! जो तुम आज जालके बन्धनसे छूटनेके बाद ही कृतज्ञतावश मुझ अपने शत्रुको सुख पहुँचानेका असंदिग्ध उपाय ढूँढ़ने लगे हो
kṛtaṃ mṛgayase śatruṃ sukhopāyam asaṃśayam | asmin nilaya eva tvaṃ nyagrodhād avatāritaḥ ||
Бхишма сказал: «Ты, без сомнения, ищешь верный и мягкий способ принести благо своему врагу в ответ на совершённое деяние. Но ведь именно в этом жилище тебя спустили с баньяна. Почему же, освободившись из силка, ты так спешишь — из благодарности — найти путь, чтобы доставить утешение мне, твоему врагу? Что до воздаяния за добро, наше положение равно: если я избавил тебя от опасности, то и ты спас меня от подобной беды. Так почему же лишь ты торопишься отплатить, тогда как я ничего не делаю?»
