The Nature, Forms, and Function of Daṇḍa

सान्त्वयोगमतिः: प्राज्ञ: कार्याकार्यप्रयोजक: । निगूढबुद्धेर्धीरस्य वक्तव्ये वा कृतं तथा,राजामें सबको समझा-बुझाकर युक्तिसे काम निकालनेकी बुद्धि होनी चाहिये। वह विद्वान होनेके साथ ही लोगोंको कर्तव्यकी प्रेरणा दे और अकर्तव्यकी ओर जानेसे रोके अथवा जिसकी बुद्धि गूढ़ या गम्भीर है, उस धीर पुरुषको उपदेश देनेकी आवश्यकता ही क्या है?

sāntvayogamatiḥ prājñaḥ kāryākāryaprayojakaḥ | nigūḍhabuddher dhīrasya vaktavye vā kṛtaṃ tathā ||

Бхишма сказал: «Царь должен обладать умом, воспитанным в искусстве примирения и тонкого рассуждения, способным совершать должное и удерживать от недолжного. Пусть он будет мудр, побуждая людей к долгу и удерживая их от проступка. Но что до человека стойкого, с глубоким и скрытно хранимым разумением—самообузданного,—какая нужда наставлять такого?»

A ruler should combine gentle persuasion with practical discernment: promote rightful action (kārya), prevent wrongful action (akārya), and guide others toward dharma. Yet a truly steady and deep-minded person needs little external instruction, because inner clarity already governs conduct.
