Jaitrya-nimitta: Signs of Prospective Victory and the Priority of Conciliation
bhīṣma uvāca | gambhīra-śabdāś ca mahā-svanāś ca śaṅkhāś ca bheryaś ca nadanti yatra | yuyutsavaś cāpratīpā bhavanti jayasya etad bhāvino rūpam āhuḥ ||
Victory is indicated not only by external signs (resounding conches and drums) but also by internal readiness: warriors united, eager, and favorable in spirit. The verse links auspiciousness with collective morale and disciplined resolve in the pursuit of one’s duty.
Bhishma describes traditional auspicious indicators seen before or during battle: the deep sound of conches, the loud roar of war-drums, and troops who are eager to fight and not opposed. These are presented as signs that victory is imminent.
