Agni’s Curse and the Restoration of Ritual Order
आपो देवगणा: सर्वे आप: पितृगणास्तथा । दर्शश्व॒ पौर्णमासश्न देवानां पितृभि: सह,“जल ही देवता हैं तथा जल ही पितृगण हैं। दर्श और पौर्णमास याग पितरों तथा देवताओंके लिये किये जाते हैं
āpo devagaṇāḥ sarve āpaḥ pitṛgaṇās tathā | darśaś ca paurṇamāsaś ca devānāṃ pitṛbhiḥ saha ||
Шаунака говорит: «Вода сама по себе — сонм всех богов, и вода же — сонм питри (предков). Обряды Дарша и Паурнамаса совершаются для богов вместе с питри».
शौनक उवाच
That water is a sacred medium linking humans to both gods and ancestors; therefore, regular lunar rites (Darśa and Paurṇamāsa) uphold dharma by honoring both divine and ancestral obligations through offerings sustained by water.
Śaunaka is articulating a ritual principle: the Darśa (new-moon) and Paurṇamāsa (full-moon) sacrifices are directed to the gods and also to the Pitṛs, highlighting how Vedic rites integrate worship of deities with reverence for ancestors.
