Ādi Parva, Adhyāya 158 — Aṅgāraparṇa-saṃvāda and Gaṅgā-tīrtha Saṃghaṭṭa
Encounter at the Gaṅgā ford

The verse frames self-destruction (ātmatyāga) as ethically censurable and urges prompt, responsible action: preserve life, protect one’s lineage, and safeguard dependents—especially vulnerable children.
A Brahmin speaker counsels someone in crisis: after reflecting on the situation, the person should abandon the thought of self-harm and instead act immediately to rescue himself, his family line, and the two children from impending danger.
