अनुक्रमणिकाध्यायः (Anukramaṇikā Adhyāya) — Invocation, Narrator Frame, and Textual Scope

संग्रहाध्यायबीजो वै पौलोमास्तीकमूलवान्‌ । सम्भवस्कन्धविस्तार: सभारण्यविटड्कवान्‌,महाभारत-वृक्षका बीज है संग्रहाध्याय और जड़ है पौलोम एवं आस्तीकपर्व। सम्भवपर्व इसके स्कन्धका विस्तार है और सभा तथा अरण्यपर्व पक्षियोंके रहनेयोग्य कोटर हैं

saṅgrahādhyāyabījo vai paulomāstīkamūlavān | sambhavaskandhavistāraḥ sabhāraṇyaviṭaṅkavān ||

Махабхарата уподобляется великому дереву: её семя — «Санграха» (глава-обзор), корни — разделы Паулома и Астика, ствол разрастается как раздел Самбхава, а дупла, пригодные для птичьего жилья, — это разделы Сабха и Аранья. Образ передаёт органическое единство эпоса: из одного истока раскрываются многие ветви наставления, повествования и дхармы.
