Cosmic Appointments, Viṣṇu’s Vibhūtis, Fourfold Operation, and the Symbolism of Ornaments and Weapons
Speaker: Parasara
Topic: Meditative contemplation (dhyāna) on Viṣṇu’s cakra as a support for steady awareness
Teaching: Devotional
Quality: compassionate
Concept: Fix the mind on the Sudarśana-cakra in Viṣṇu’s hand—ever-moving and surpassing the wind—so the restless mind becomes anchored in the Lord’s sovereign śakti.
Vedantic Theme: Moksha
Application: Use a concrete divine form (cakra) as an ālambana for meditation: return attention to it whenever thoughts scatter.
Vishishtadvaita: Devotional contemplation on the Lord’s form is a valid means: the finite mind steadies by taking refuge in the infinite Person’s power.
Vishnu Form: Hari
Bhakti Type: Shanta
In this verse, the Chakra is a concrete support for meditation, symbolizing Viṣṇu’s irresistible sovereignty that upholds cosmic order and removes disorder.
He instructs the mind to ‘hold’ a vivid divine form—Viṣṇu’s rapidly whirling discus—so attention becomes one-pointed and anchored in the Supreme.
Viṣṇu is presented as the supreme locus of power and order; meditating on what rests in His hand emphasizes His lordship over all forces, even the wind.
