Ravana’s Funeral Rites and the Ethics of Post-War Conduct
अप्रियामिवोपसंगृह्यकिंशेषेरणमेदिनीम् ।।।।अप्रियामिवकस्माच्छमांनेच्छस्यभिभाषितुम् ।
apriyām ivopasaṅgṛhya kiṁ śeṣe raṇamedinīm |
apriyām iva kasmāc cha māṁ necchasy abhibhāṣitum ||
Por que jazes no chão do campo de batalha, abraçando a terra como se fosse uma amada? E por que, como se eu não te fosse querida, não queres responder-me?
"You are lying in the battlefield embracing it as if it is a loved one. Why are you not willing to answer me?"
Dharma recognizes the truth of mortality; grief seeks dialogue, but Satya requires accepting silence where life has ended.
Mandodarī addresses the fallen Rāvaṇa, unable to accept his stillness, speaking as though he might reply.
