The Greatness of the Ancestors: Ekoddiṣṭa Śrāddha, Āśauca Rules, and Sapiṇḍīkaraṇa
pulastya uvāca | kauśiko nāma dharmātmā kurukṣetre mahānṛṣiḥ | nāmataḥ karmatastasya putrāṇāṃ tannibodha me
Pulastya is speaking, introducing the righteous sage Kauśika of Kurukṣetra and announcing that he will describe Kauśika’s sons by their names and actions.
It signals that lineage is presented not only as a list of names but also as a moral-spiritual account where character and conduct (karma) define the significance of descendants.
The verse frames righteousness as the defining trait of true greatness: a “mahānṛṣi” is marked by devotion to dharma, not merely by status or learning.
