Bhīṣma–Arjuna Encounter Framed Cosmically

Bhīṣma urges restraint and unity: internal quarrels and factionalism (vibheda) weaken a cause, especially in crisis. Ethical leadership here means prioritizing collective duty and strategic cohesion over personal grievance.
In the Virāṭa episode’s battlefield context, Bhīṣma addresses the preceptor’s son (Aśvatthāman), asking him to be patient and not sow division. He emphasizes the rare, authoritative heritage of sacred knowledge and weapon-lore (Vedas and Brahmāstra) in their teacher-line, and calls everyone to unite to face Arjuna.
