जब विराटनरेश प्रसन्न होकर तुम्हें हाथियोंसे लड़ाते हैं, उस समय रनिवासकी दूसरी स्त्रियाँ तो हँसती हैं और मेरा हृदय शोकसे व्याकुल हो उठता है ।। शार्टूलैर्महिषै: सिंहैरागारे योध्यसे यदा । कैकेय्या: प्रेक्षमाणायास्तदा मे कश्मलं भवेत्,जब रानी सुदेष्णा दर्शक बनकर बैठती हैं और तुम महलके आँगनमें व्याप्रों, सिंहों तथा भैंसोंसे लड़ते हो, उस समय मुझे बड़ी व्यथा होती है
śārṭūlair mahiṣaiḥ siṃhair āgāre yodhyase yadā | kaikeyyāḥ prekṣamāṇāyās tadā me kaśmalaṃ bhavet ||
Disse Vaiśampāyana: Sempre que te fazem lutar no pátio do palácio com tigres, búfalos e leões—enquanto a rainha (Kaikeyī/Sudeṣṇā) se senta a observar—meu coração é tomado por angústia e confusão. Embora as outras mulheres dos aposentos internos riam do espetáculo, sou vencido pela tristeza, pois tal divertimento perigoso é indigno de quem deveria ser protegido, e transforma a coragem em entretenimento cruel.
वैशम्पायन उवाच
The verse contrasts public amusement with private moral sensitivity: turning lethal danger into entertainment hardens the heart. True dharma includes compassion and restraint—especially in royal settings—so that strength is not displayed through needless cruelty or reckless endangerment.
In the Virāṭa court setting, the addressee is compelled to fight powerful animals within the palace precincts while the queen watches. Others laugh, but the speaker (narrator’s reported voice) feels deep distress (kaśmala), emphasizing the peril and the impropriety of such a spectacle.
