True excellence is twofold: practical mastery that benefits others (here, the refined skill of providing nourishing, delightful food) and unwavering commitment to dharma. The verse links worldly competence with ethical steadiness, presenting both as worthy divine gifts.
Bṛhadaśva recounts a boon granted by Yama: the recipient (understood in context as King Nala) receives extraordinary capability regarding the ‘rasa’ of food—ensuring superb cuisine—and also attains supreme firmness in dharma, indicating moral reliability alongside skill.
