Even in hardship, one should uphold dharma: honor the learned and needy by offering the first share, and use force only when necessary for protection, not for pleasure or excess.
During the Pāṇḍavas’ forest period, Vaiśampāyana describes their disciplined conduct: they live on forest produce and cultivated grain, first offering the best portion to Brāhmaṇas, and they kill dangerous animals with arrows only to safeguard others.
