तद् वसामो वयं छजन्नास्तदनुज्ञातुमर्हथ । सुयोधनश्व दुष्टात्मा कर्णश्न सहसौबल:,“अतः इस वर्ष हम छिपकर रहना चाहते हैं। इसके लिये आपलोग हमें आज्ञा दें। दुष्टात्मा दुर्योधन, कर्ण और शकुनि हमसे अत्यन्त वैर रखते हैं। वे स्वयं तो हमारा पता लगानेको उद्यत हैं ही, उन्होंने गुप्तचर भी लगा रखे हैं। अतः यदि उन्हें हमारे रहनेका पता चल जायगा, तो वे हमसे सम्बन्ध रखनेवाले पुरजनों तथा स्वजनोंके साथ भी विषम (बुरा) बर्ताव कर सकते हैं
tad vasāmo vayaṃ chajannās tad anu-jñātum arhatha | suyodhanaś ca duṣṭātmā karṇaś ca sahasaubalaḥ ||
Disse Vaiśampāyana: “Por isso desejamos viver em ocultamento neste ano; deveis conceder-nos permissão para tal. Pois Suyodhana (Duryodhana), de ânimo perverso, juntamente com Karṇa e Saubala (Śakuni), nutre contra nós intensa inimizade. Eles se empenham em descobrir o nosso paradeiro e também puseram espiões em movimento. Se a nossa morada vier a ser conhecida, poderão tratar com dureza e injustiça até mesmo os nossos anciãos e parentes—os que estão ligados a nós.”
वैशम्पायन उवाच
The passage highlights prudent dharma in adversity: when faced with unjust hostility and surveillance, one may adopt concealment to prevent harm not only to oneself but also to elders and relatives. Ethical responsibility extends to protecting one’s wider social network from retaliatory abuse.
The speakers (the exiled heroes) request permission to remain hidden for the year, explaining that Duryodhana, Karna, and Śakuni are actively searching for them and have deployed spies; if discovered, these enemies may mistreat their connected elders and kinsmen.
