Kuntī’s concealed childbirth and the river-borne casket
जह्नषुर्देवगन्धर्वा दृष्टवा शक्रपुरोगमा: । अल्पावशेषमायुश्च ततो$मन्यन्त रक्षस:
jahnuṣur devagandharvā dṛṣṭvā śakrapurogamaḥ | alpāvaśeṣam āyuś ca tato 'manyanta rākṣasāḥ ||
Mārkaṇḍeya disse: “Quando se viram os deuses e os Gandharvas, à frente Indra, os rākṣasas perderam o ânimo e definharam; percebendo que lhes restava pouca vida, concluíram então que o fim estava próximo.”
मार्कण्डेय उवाच
The verse underscores that when the forces aligned with dharma and cosmic order appear—symbolized by Indra leading the gods—those rooted in adharma lose courage and vitality; awareness of mortality and impending consequence follows inner collapse.
Mārkaṇḍeya describes a moment where the rākṣasas, upon seeing the gods and Gandharvas led by Indra, become dispirited and perceive that their remaining life is small, concluding that destruction is imminent.
