Human birth, even when blessed with comfort and opportunity, is meaningful only if one awakens to dharma (one’s duty and moral responsibility). Failure to do so leads to ethical decline and consequent downfall into lower states of existence.
A divine messenger explains the moral logic of rebirth: a being may attain a fortunate human life, but if he does not recognize and follow his proper duty while human, he degenerates and is said to move toward lower forms or conditions.
