Draupadī’s Identification of the Pāṇḍavas and the Onset of the Chariot Engagement
The verse highlights moral sensitivity: an elder (Bhīṣma) experiences lajjā/vrīḍā upon witnessing a troubling departure or outcome, and responds by withdrawing rather than escalating conflict—suggesting that conscience and restraint are integral to dharma.
As certain people leave (samprasthitān), Bhīṣma sees them depart and, feeling ashamed, goes back to his own residence. It functions as a brief narrative beat marking Bhīṣma’s reaction and a transition to the next event.
