Duryodhana’s Shame and Consideration of Prāyopaveśa
(तवाद्य पृथिवी राजन्नखिला सागराम्बरा | सपर्वतवनारामा सह स्थावरजड़मा ।।) “राजन! पर्वत, वन, उद्यान एवं स्थावर-जड़मोंसहित यह सारी समुद्रपर्यना पृथ्वी आज तुम्हारे अधिकारमें है ।। प्राच्याश्न दाक्षिणात्याश्व प्रतीच्योदीच्यवासिन: । कृता: करप्रदा: सर्वे राजानस्ते नराधिप,“नरेश्वर! पूर्व, दक्षिण, पश्चिम और उत्तर दिशाके सभी राजाओंको तुम्हारे लिये करदाता बना दिया है
vaiśampāyana uvāca |
tavādya pṛthivī rājann akhilā sāgarāmbarā |
sa-parvata-vanārāmā saha sthāvara-jaḍāmayā ||
prācyāś ca dākṣiṇātyāś ca pratīcyodīcya-vāsinaḥ |
kṛtāḥ kara-pradāḥ sarve rājānas te narādhipa ||
Vaiśampāyana disse: “Ó rei, hoje toda esta terra —cingida pelo oceano— com suas montanhas, florestas e jardins de deleite, até mesmo com tudo o que é imóvel e inanimado, está sob tua autoridade. Os reis que habitam o oriente, o sul, o ocidente e o norte foram todos feitos tributários teus, ó senhor dos homens.”
वैशम्पायन उवाच
The verse highlights the scope of royal authority—extending over the whole ocean-bounded earth and its resources—and implicitly points to rajadharma: such power entails the obligation to protect, administer fairly, and avoid arrogance, since dominion over land and peoples is a moral trust, not merely a prize.
Vaiśampāyana reports that the addressed king has attained overarching sovereignty: the entire earth is said to be under his control, and kings from all four directions have been made tributary, paying taxes/tribute to him.
