All higher practice and ethical-spiritual attainment rests on tapas, and tapas is fulfilled specifically through indriya-saṃyama—restraint of the senses. Without self-control, austerity is only a name, not a realized discipline.
In the Vana Parva’s dialogue setting, the hunter (vyādha) responds to a brahmin’s inquiry on dharma by emphasizing that the root of what the brahmin seeks is austerity grounded in sense-restraint, offering practical ethical instruction rather than mere ritual theory.
