Agni’s Withdrawal to the Forest and Identification with Āṅgirasa (अग्न्याङ्गिरस-इतिहासः)
मिथिलायां वसेद् व्याध: स ते धर्मान् प्रवक्ष्यति । तत्र गच्छस्व भद्ठर|ं ते यथाकामं द्विजोत्तम,मिथिलामें एक व्याध रहता है, जो माता-पिताका सेवक, सत्यवादी और जितेन्द्रिय है, वह तुम्हें धर्मका उपदेश करेगा। द्विजश्रेष्ठ! तुम अपनी रुचिके अनुसार वहीं जाओ, तुम्हारा मंगल हो
mithilāyāṁ vased vyādhaḥ sa te dharmān pravakṣyati | tatra gacchasva bhadraṁ te yathākāmaṁ dvijottama ||
“Em Mithilā vive um caçador; ele te exporá o dharma. Vai até lá, ó melhor dos duas-vezes-nascidos—que o bem te aconteça; vai como desejares.”
ब्राह्मण उवाच
Dharma is to be learned from genuine virtue and lived conduct, not merely from social rank; even a hunter can be a true teacher if he embodies truthfulness, self-control, and service.
A brāhmaṇa is directed to travel to Mithilā to meet a hunter who is reputed to be a knower of dharma; the verse functions as a turning point that sends the seeker toward an unconventional but authoritative source of ethical instruction.
